Electronic cigarettes – How do they feel?
For every smoker who considers trying an electronic cigarette the first thought is usually how does it feel? The first question may be how does it work? but straight off the bat there will be a sub conscious assessment that an electronic cigarette cannot replicate the experience of smoking a real cigarette. I first heard of them when a friend mentioned that he was going to buy one online. I asked him what did he know about them and he said nothing except that he read that they helped people to quit smoking. He didn’t know how they worked either, only that you inhaled flavored liquid with nicotine in it called e-liquid, and when you exhale it looks like smoke but it isn’t, it’s just vapor. He didn’t know very much at all but was more than willing to try because he had only heard good things about them and he was desperate to give up smoking. I immediately envisioned a cigarette shaped toy that produced some sort of smoke, I imagined dragging on a piece of plastic and blowing out steam like you do on a freezing cold morning. I could not for the life of me imagine that such a device would give me the same sensation, the same “throat hit” that I get from smoking tobacco.
When he eventually received his electronic cigarette in the post and presented it to me I was happy to try it but didn’t expect it to be much more than a gimmick for people who wanted quit smoking but still carry on with the habitual actions of smoking as a psychological crutch, how wrong I was. When I took my first drag it certainly wasn’t what I expected, nor should I say, was it smoking, it was different, it was interesting, but it wasn’t like smoking a cigarette. However, I should add, I am now an ex-cigarette smoker, I am a vaper.
However let me say first that vaping does not compare to smoking tobacco for me anyway, it is a different experience. There are a lot of similarities in that you place a cylindrical shaped object in your mouth, you drag and inhale, you feel a sensation on your throat and you exhale a smoke like substance. But it’s the differences that are more important for anyone who wants to convert. For me the first thing is knowing when to stop vaping. With a real cigarette, it’s a controlled procedure, you light it, smoke it, put it out and your good to go for a certain period of time. It’s a reciprocal agreement between you and your nicotine requirements. Sometimes I wished my cigarettes were longer, sometimes not so, nevertheless I would always smoke it to the end, not so with the ecig, I find I keep smoking it as long as I please, and because it contains nicotine I often get head spin, that’s when I put it down. And because it is sitting beside me while I work on my pc I pick it up and drag on it whenever I want, maybe a couple of drags every 10 minutes or so, it’s easy to do. This means that I have to make a concerted effort to control my intake. Initially I tried to treat it like a real cigarette, I counted the puffs, 15, and then put it down, but subconsciously found myself picking it up intermittently throughout the day. Maybe some can do it that way but for me, it’s a whole different way of smoking.
Then there’s the sensation, it’s not really like smoking, it’s good, certainly good enough for me to never want a real cigarette, but it’s not exactly the same. For a start there are over 50 different flavors to choose from. There are many tobacco flavors, but there are others ones, like grape, bubblegum, mixed fruit, brandy, etc. I have tried quite a few of them and some are better than others, but none of them really taste like tobacco. That’s not a bad thing, it’s just different. Nor is the experience without it’s teething problems in getting used to it. Not everyone has this experience, but I found that initially I had a sort of burning tongue sensation, similar to the one you get when you start smoking tobacco, it went away after a few days but it was not something I expected. Also it took a while to get used to the right proportion of nicotine, you can get from low to super high. I initially got medium but found it was too harsh for me, I could really feel it on my throat and switched to low, not being a heavy smoker this was a better choice.
On top there are the other differences, better differences, the distinct lack of the smell of smoke for one, no lingering smell from your clothes, nor your breath and the fact that you can vape indoors and no one will notice, these are differences that you will notice, differences that will definitely make you a little happier. It’s true to say that vaping is a different experience than smoking, and it will take you a bit of time to get used to, but bear in mind that 83% of those who try it, find it replaces their need to smoke tobacco completely. If you haven’t started I recommend the ego CE5 started kit as an easy all in one solution to get you going. Give it a shot, there’s an 83% chance that you won’t be disappointed.
